Already two and a half thousand years ago, one felt particularly at ease at the entrance to Ötztal. Not without reason the village of Oetz gave the name to the entire valley. Until today, the region is well-liked for its typical Tirolean charm and - especially in winter - the villages of Oetz, Sautens and Haiming-Ochsengarten boast a variety of unique advantages: Ranging from the ski area directly accessible from Oetz and Ochsengarten to the natural jewel of lake Piburger See, quaint huts, restaurants and shopping facilities. Not to mention the countless top hotels, guesthouses, B&Bs, holiday chalets and apartments. Of course easily reachable by public transport lines in almost no time.
The ancient settlement history of Oetz - called "Ez" in Ötztal dialect - can be discovered best by interested guests in the historic village center with its museum in the tower and the old masonry. The village has developed considerably over the decades but still has maintained its authentic flair despite modern infrastructures including sports and shopping facilities.
Oetz is only a few minutes away from the Hochoetz ski area located above. The mountain gondola from the village gives direct access to the slopes, according to the ultimate motto for winter vacationers: no driving, no problems when it comes to parking spaces - just skiing. The free skibus takes you to the Acherkogel gondola station, from there you enjoy a comfy ride straight up to the snow paradise of the Hochoetz Ski Region located beyond 2000 meters above sea level. The area not only has a superb setting, there are also family-friendly offers for young and old and absolute snow reliability. And if you still want more of it, you can conquer two ski areas with one lift ticket purchased in Hochoetz: Hochoetz and adjoining Kühtai. A total of 24 mountain lifts and 80 slope kilometers are available with the Hochoetz skipass. One thing is for sure: endless sunshine - as the Hochoetz Ski Region ranks among the 5 sunniest ski areas in all Austria.

If you prefer to frolic away from the ski areas and indulge in more gentle winter sports, then it's best to head for lake Piburger See. Pure nature has a completely new meaning here: encircled by the mountain landscape above Oetz, with a view of Acherkogel peak - the true landmark of Oetz - winter reveals its most glittering, silent and original side: winter walking tours, ice skating on the lake's natural ice surface or tobogganing with the little ones are on the fun-packed program.
After so much rest amid untouched nature, a change of pace is just right: enjoy shopping or a visit to a restaurant in Oetz. The lovely village center invites you to stroll up and down the streets.
If you prefer to avoid the hustle and bustle of major winter sports destinations but appreciate the slopes in the immediate vicinity, then Sautens is the perfect spot for you. The lovely village in Lower Ötztal is idyllically located on the valley floor at 812 meters above sea level. Here you will find an authentic village with character, coupled with a wide range of gentle winter sports for all the family. Be it tobogganing, sledding, snowshoe hiking or winter walking, Sautens makes a perfect starting point for wildly romantic tours through snow-covered Alpine landscapes.
And if you are looking for jovial après-ski fun, party galore or countless slope kilometers, you can easily go on a splendid ski safari: within only 30 driving minutes you reach 10 more ski regions in Ötztal and the surroundings areas.
